Yanga striker Amisi Tambwe (R) leaps high as he
attempts to score past Platimun Stars goalie Petro Mhari who cleared the
ball when the two teams played their CAF Confederation Cup first leg
match.
Yanga kicked off the match impressively as they launched attacks upfront and took 28 minutes to break the deadlock.
It was Salum Telela who opened the floodgates when he lobbied the
ball past advancing Platinum Stars goalkeeper Petro Mhari as Yanga
enjoyed the valuable opener to attain psychological advantage.
Yanga continued to enjoy an upper hand in the opening half as
midfielder Haruna Niyonzima punished Platinum Stars goalie Mhari who
parried an earlier shot by striker Amisi Tambwe. Niyonzima easily scored
to give Yanga a comfortable two goal lead.
However, Yanga’s celebrations were short-lived when Platinum Stars’
substitute Thabani Kamusoko scored from a power-packed dead ball
outside the penalty box to beat Yanga goalie Ali Mustafa on the brink of
half time.
The teams progressed towards the dressing rooms with Yanga leading by 2-1 goals.
Yanga kicked off the second half where they left with striker Amisi
Tambwe coolly sliding home the third goal courtesy of Mrisho Ngasa’s
penetrative pass inside the penalty box.
As if it was not enough Yanga continued to besiege Platinum Stars
goal when Mrisho Ngasa capitalised on the visitor’s defensive laxity to
notch the fourth goal after 60 minutes.
Ngasa concluded his brace for the day with great composure when he
hammered the final nail on the Platinum Stars coffin with the fifth for
Yanga with last-gasp goal barely a minute before regulation time when
he was set up by Liberian import Kpar Sherman.
The teams are expected to meet in the second leg of the contest to be played in Harare in a fortnight.
The victory has placed Yanga in a pole position but the away goal
could prove vital for their next hosts in Harare if they can click.
